A Little Green Goes a Long Way

March is the season when we start craving a little more color, a little more light, and—of course—a touch of green. This kitchen proves that green can be a beautiful design choice all year long.

The star of the space is the deep green base cabinetry, which grounds the entire kitchen with rich color and personality. The hue feels sophisticated rather than trendy, pairing beautifully with the crisp white upper cabinets that keep the room feeling bright and open. It’s a perfect balance: bold enough to stand out, yet timeless enough to live with for years.

Adding warmth and character is the stunning copper range hood that anchors the cooking area. Its soft patina catches the light and complements the brass hardware, creating a layered look that feels both classic and welcoming. Behind the range, a subtle stone backsplash provides movement without overwhelming the design.

The kitchen island continues the green cabinetry and is topped with a creamy countertop that reflects natural light from the surrounding windows. A farmhouse sink and polished faucet bring both charm and functionality to the center of the room, making the island a natural gathering place for everything from morning coffee to evening meal prep.

Overhead, the pendant lights glow warmly, casting a soft golden tone that echoes the copper hood and enhances the inviting atmosphere. Open shelving adds just the right amount of display space for everyday items and a bit of personality, while dark wood floors anchor the room with a rich, grounding contrast. And if you look closely, you’ll notice the cutest kitchen supervisor of all—a sweet Boykin Spaniel sitting patiently on the floor, likely waiting for a snack.

Dreaming of a new space? You may not find a pot of gold at 345 Lafayette Avenue, but you'll find plenty of inspiration at AKandB's showroom!

           The Power of Classical Features

As the year draws to a close, New Year’s Eve invites reflection—and anticipation. At Architectural Kitchens & Baths, this moment is more than a calendar change! It’s a chance to look ahead and reaffirm a truth we see proven year after year: classical design endures, and delivers lasting return on investment.

           The Power of Classical Features

Classical kitchen elements have remained consistent in taste for decades, not because they resist change, but because they adapt beautifully to it.

           Think of features such as:

            Clean, well-proportioned cabinetry

            Solid wood construction

Neutral palettes with depth and warmth

Traditional door styles with subtle customization

These choices transcend short-lived trends. They feel as appropriate today as they will ten or twenty years from now, making them a smart, future-focused investment. When homeowners consider return on investment, kitchens consistently rank at the top—and cabinetry plays a major role. Why? Classical cabinetry ages gracefully, appeals to a broad range of buyers, and maintains value even as trends shift.

At AKandB, our commitment remains the same: designing custom cabinetry that stands the test of time while thoughtfully embracing what’s next. As the year draws to an end, we celebrate not just new trends—but enduring design, lasting value, and kitchens built to be loved for years to come.

If a new kitchen is part of your new year goals, start the process with a visit to our showroom. We'll show you exactly why classical quality matters.

Invest Once, Love It Forever: Why Quality Matters in the Kitchen

Wolf, Sub-Zero, Dacor, Miele, La Cornue, AGA, Asko, Bosch, Le Creuset, Staub, All-Clad, Wüsthof…A long lineup of luxury kitchen names. Some people swear by them; others call them overpriced. After more than ten personal renovations and countless hours of real-world use, here’s my honest conclusion: There will always be debates about which brand is “worth it.” But the factor that consistently rises to the top—right beside resale value—is performance quality. When it comes to cabinetry, this matters even more.

To understand why, let’s step out of the kitchen for a moment.

           The Couch Test

Imagine you're shopping for a family-room sofa. Comfort and style? Absolutely. Budget? Of course. But think about your life: maybe your spouse is tall, your kids are energetic, and you have two dogs who think every piece of furniture is theirs. That sofa is going to live a hard life.

Sure, you can steam clean it, brush off dog hair, and do your best to maintain it… but construction is everything. Choose a bargain-built sofa and you'll quickly notice sagging cushions, loose joints, and fabric that gives up long before you're ready to.

Cheap is cheap—no way around it.

           Cabinetry Is No Different

Cabinetry isn’t just decorative—it’s daily-use furniture that works harder than almost anything else you own. Doors open and close thousands of times. Drawers hold heavy cookware. Moisture, heat, spills, and fingers everywhere. Durability isn’t optional; it's essential.

I once met a sweet widow whose “dream kitchen” had been remodeled just four years prior. White cabinets, perfectly styled… but behind the charm was a disaster waiting to happen. Boxes pulling from the walls, drawers hanging crooked—her investment simply didn’t hold up. The cause? Low-quality construction disguised by a pretty finish.

We rebuilt her space with true craftsmanship. Today, she's back to entertaining, with cabinetry designed to last decades, not merely seasons.

           The Takeaway

Quality isn't about showing off brand names—it’s about value over time. In the kitchen, you feel the difference daily: smooth drawers, solid doors, appliances that perform and endure. Buy cheap and you’ll likely buy twice. Invest well, and you’ll enjoy it every day for years to come.

When I asked my friend what he considered the most essential feature in a kitchen, his answer was immediate: a generous island. Not merely a surface for preparing meals, but a multifunctional centerpiece where cooking, conversation, and a glass of wine coexist effortlessly. To him, the island embodies the modern ideal of kitchen design—a space that merges practicality with social connection, transforming the kitchen into a home's central stage.

It’s easy to imagine exactly what he means. The island is more than a countertop; it’s a tactile, inviting centerpiece, crafted from lustrous marble, gleaming quartz, or richly grained exotic woods. Expansive enough to spread out fresh ingredients, cradle a delicate glass of wine, and still leave room for conversation, it draws people in, blending activity with connection. Above, pendant lights are chosen with care, casting a soft, purposeful glow across the surface, highlighting its texture and inviting touch. In every sense, the island is where design meets life—a space both functional and warmly magnetic, where connection and creativity collide.

Bringing Order to Chaos: Why the Mudroom is a Family Winner

For the last child still living at home, my philosophy on their bedroom upkeep and maintenance was simple:

           close the door.

So you can imagine my surprise one weekend when my youngest daughter pulled into the driveway, home from college and began unloading storage containers and hanging systems from Target out of her SUV. I couldn’t resist the raised eyebrow and smirk. She shot right back, “What?? I’ve got to get organized!”

Amazing. Even the evolving brain of a teenager eventually craves order from chaos.

In the adult world, that’s one of the joys of designing spaces—bringing order to chaos. Some of the chef's kitchens, laundry rooms, home offices, and over-the-top storage projects we’ve worked on are nothing short of fantasy come to life. I once spent hours guiding groups through a grand remodeling project we helped bring to life—complete with soaring beamed ceilings, a graceful balustrade and banister, an oversized master bath, and a dream kitchen.

And yet, what left people truly wide-eyed? The mudroom. Family lockers. A built-in pet washing station. Like the stock photo above, people stood oohing and awing.

           Go figure.

Remodeling a kitchen is not typically a fun event. It's inconvenient, intrusive and messy. Most of us have to work in a budget and decide where to

            and where to

           save

. When evaluating cabinet investment, it's important to look beyond just the appearance. Cabinets are typically graded on three key components: the box, the shelves, and the drawers.

We understand that clients often seek more budget-friendly options from large retailers. While it's true that places like Lowe's or Home Depot can provide generic plans using builder-grade materials, there's a significant difference between a "newly installed" look and how cabinets hold up to "your family's' daily use. I recall moving back to Kentucky and looking at homes where the "just renovated" kitchens looked appealing at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the cabinet doors didn't close properly, drawers were crooked, and the overall feel of the cabinetry was flimsy/thin.

Like most products, the price directly reflects the quality of materials and construction methods. In cabinetry, opting for particleboard, melamine, and stapled drawers will directly influence the performance you can expect after just a few months of family use. How many times my children slid into the kitchen on socked feet, slamming into the perimeter cabinetry or used a cabinet door to help them onto the counter top was a daily event no matter how many times they were told not to. The kitchen should definitely not be a "look but don't touch" area!

If you're ready to start the process, come visit us at the little yellow house on the corner of Lafayette and Euclid Avenues across from Krogers. We'll show you what the inside of a cabinet should look like and provide a range of quality options in different price points. Island Light Fixtures

Choosing the right lighting above your kitchen island involves several considerations. You'll want to think about the quantity, height, and size of the fixtures to ensure proper illumination while also complementing the overall visual design of your kitchen.

Consider any prominent features, such as a large stove hood. Would clear glass pendants offer a less visually cluttered look in that case? If your cabinetry is simple, perhaps fixtures in antiqued brass or other metals could add warmth. Even colored glass pendants can bring an unexpected element to traditional kitchens.

For tasks like baking or food preparation, adjustable weighted pulley lamps could be a practical and stylish option. And if your ceilings allow, don't underestimate the impact of larger pendant lights.

Thoughts on 2025 Kitchen & Bath Trends

           Personalize Your Space

Based on AI's predicted 2025 trends, kitchen and bath designs are moving towards warmer, more personalized spaces that focus on functionality and natural materials. The prediction is to expect a shift away from all-white kitchens, with bold colors and mixed metals trending again. Also expected to be popular are open shelving, smart storage, and custom design elements, alongside sustainable and eco-friendly choices.

I personally find trend predictions a bit pointless. Recycling popular styles and presenting them as new design guidelines feels insincere. While "personalized spaces" and a focus on "functionality and smart storage" are always relevant, the prediction of "bold colors" does ring true, especially with the rise in greens (from pistachio to dark hunter) and blues (from grey-blue to navy), combined with creative uses of lighting, hardware, and metal fixtures.

However, the move away from "all-white kitchens" isn't something I'm seeing. At AKandB, effortlessly stylish kitchens in whites, off-whites, and other neutral schemes that evoke a calm sophistication are still very much in demand. Think Scandinavian elegance, monochrome designs, handle-less cabinetry for a minimalist look, and hidden storage to promote a clutter-free environment.

The right tools and workspace are the keys to getting any job done... and done right the first time! My eldest daughter enjoyed an afternoon at her in-laws making an insane amount of home-made ravioli. When you marry into a family with Italian heritage, there is the Notorious B.I.D., ie Big Italian Dinner. They don't prepare anything small, always for a crowd... and leftovers are encouraged.

Sharing some images from the day, I noticed a couple of things. This was a family affair with many hands making light work! A process was in place and bodies that needed work space. This kitchen was designed for more than one cook- ample perimeter cabinetry that allowed them to spread out all the ingredients and tools without clutter. Dough was prepared to a smooth, elastic product on a flour covered stone countertop that could be quickly wiped down and ready for the next phase. The next few pictures were using a ravioli rolling pin that was an antique metal version belonging to the mother's family. Such a simple tool! It allowed them to fly through the process of making consistent pieces ready to be filled and sealed. They made Lamb, Butternut Squash, Mushroom and Spinach/Ricotta versions for a special gathering; something for everyone!

At AKandB, we understand what it means to do the job efficient and right. When you are huge cooks that often have family and friends over helping to get dinner on the table, having the right tools and a lot of space is important.

The iconic centerpiece to many feasts is the roasted turkey. Why turkey? It feeds a lot of people and is one of the few types of meat that is indigenous to the Americas… but that certainly doesn’t stop those that prefer serving a nice beef or pork tenderloin! As my children matured, so did their menu requests! Traditional side dishes of mashed potatoes, stuffing and macaroni and cheese gave way to carmelized brussel sprouts and Gruyere scalloped potatoes. As a nod to Thanksgivings of the past, a dish of creamed turnips appeared at the buffet, which no one ate.

is always an issue. Families tend to gravitate to the member with the easiest place to host which usually means kitchens with multiple entrance/exit points, making it easier for guests to socialize and encouraging smooth transition between spaces. Whether you’re standing, sitting, cooking or eating, an open plan kitchen with multiple zones and traffic flow makes for an enjoyable occasion.

This cookbook was published almost 40 years ago by the Garden Club of Lexington, a group of dedicated members that have a long history in Lexington. If you’ve ever admired the beautifully planted trees along the corridor of Richmond Road or wandered through Henry Clay’s Ashland Garden, their achievements are withstanding examples of the club’s contributions to our city.

The 1985 cookbook was an effort by the club to help fund the maintenance of the Ashland Garden originally created in 1950. It was an immediate success appealing to those interested in Kentucky, its connection to the horse industry and detailed menus for holiday entertaining.

“Originally from Kentucky, I wanted to add area recipes to my Derby Party celebration. Reading through, it was interesting to discover that some recipes were really dated, and much more sophisticated (and complicated!) now. The farm suggested menus at the beginning of the book are delightful.”

Organizing some of my kitchen shots this holiday weekend and noticed something interesting. No matter the style of the kitchen, if there was a visible cookbook shelf, one if not two local cookbooks were present. I noticed them because they both sit on my own shelf, riddled with notations, sticky notes, stains and even duct tape to hold one’s spine together! It took me on a hunt going back through kitchen images and sure enough, nestled between many iconic red checkered volumes of

This facility opened in 1984 and was established in collaboration with the Lexington Medical Society to allow families to access specialized medical treatments by providing a place for them to stay at little or sometimes no cost. The driving force to fund, construct and erect the house was Phyllis Cronin, founding President of RMHC who has given decades of service to improve the lives of many Kentuckians, especially children. Thank you for your service, Mrs. Cronin! The proceeds of the cookbook benefited not only the Ronald McDonald House but many other local organizations including Baby Health Services, God's Pantry, Hospice of the Bluegrass, Lexington Hearing and Speech Center, just to name a few.

How Ale-8 has successfully continued bottling their niche soda since 1926, passing leadership from one family member to another, expanding their product offerings and competing against industry soda giants is amazing.

Popular on Pinterest Boards is the Hidden Pantry... better yet, the Walk-in Hidden Pantry. This kitchen feature goes beyond the "Costco Effect" of stocking up on cleaning products, canned goods and paper products. It also appeals to the bakers, canners and pasta makers. Space available, this glorious storage option is hidden behind doors that seamlessly blend with your existing cabinetry. It's the perfect place for all the countertop appliances, ingredient containers, odd sized serving dishes, filtered water dispensers and anything else that really doesn't need to be displayed. Incorporating open shelves for easy access and additional counter space for those messy projects and you'll wonder how you ever did without your "secret back room".

It's April Fools Day and the joke is on us! Although historians have their theories, no one agrees on the exact origins of the day. There are references to the Hilaria Festivals during Roman times and a particularly interesting game involving sticking a paper fish on the backs of unsuspecting party gatherers during the Middle Ages. When the fish was found, the party guests shouted "poisson d'avril", which means fish of April... which is suggested as a precursor for April Fools' Day. Like in the US, France marks the day with jokes and pranks.

On the subject of jokes and pranks, I googled "epic corporate April Fool Jokes". Two of the funnier ones were by Velveeta Cheese and Honda.

"V" toted by Velveeta Cheese was a full skincare product line that used their gooey velveeta cheese as the primary ingredient. I'm not thinking smearing thick cheese on my face sounded like a good idea but apparently some people were intrigued. It was a joke.

Honda rolled out a “state-of-the-art, dog-first” technology they named PAW-S. This Pet-Activated Wireless System was heralded as a new vehicle entry activation system that allowed your dog access into your car boot- no need for you to be around! Fido could also use smart in-car technology to go for walks all by himself with his fellow four-legged friends. Interested? Again, it was a joke.

We're a jovial and good natured group at AKandB and don't always make puns in the kitchen, but when we do, it's a whisk worth taking.

Remodeling your kitchen allows you to upgrade this multi-functional space. Kitchen lighting is a three pronged challenge that needs to accommodate a variety of effects: task lighting, accent lighting and ambient lighting. Add dimmers, controllers and light switches and you’ll wonder how you were ever happy in a poorly lit space.

Never have we underestimated the power of an AKandB.com sign in a neighbor's yard! The word of mouth that generates praise for us is far more interesting than any advertising that we can purchase.

No Window? No Problem! Island Sink Designs

In a prior blog, we discussed the common placement of sinks under a kitchen window. But what if there is no window location- or enough counter space to accommodate the sink and work area? Other than the smallest kitchen layouts that are along a single wall, every other typical design tends to follow the proximity of the kitchen triangle work area: sink, stove, refrigerator. In a design that includes an island, you have the perfect answer to creating a functional flow and an aesthetically pleasing result.

           Wet Zone vs. Dry Zone

Creating distinct areas for food prep and easy clean up are based on the size of the kitchen area and client preference. If space allows, having a large main kitchen sink in the island coupled with the dishwasher isolates the wet activity from the dry activity, increasing productivity. Think of the rolling and mixing, chopping and dicing happening on the perimeter counter space while the messier prep work and clean up occurs around the sink. Using quality materials and easy to clean surfaces, this can be an ideal set up.

At AKB, we realize that there is no design solution that is right for everyone. Design needs fluctuate with so manner factors! We prefer to start with conversation, then exploration of what will work best for each of our clients.

           The Evolution of Kitchen Islands.

Freestanding surfaces in the kitchen are nothing new. They have been used for centuries in the flow of meal preparation. Worktables and chopping blocks were central stations to mixing, rolling, dicing and seasoning before recipes were sent to the fire, stove top or oven for boiling, baking, smoking or frying. Today’s free standing kitchen island has definitely evolved from a simple wooden table to all manner of custom designs offering a myriad of modern conveniences.

How you intend on using your island is the most important question to consider before meeting with a kitchen designer. Do you intend to create a bespoke seating area for your family to eat their meals? Or just a place for a couple of people to gather? Are you imagining table height or bar height? How many seats are required… and what are the ages of your family? If you have young children, bar height might pose some issues for meals… same for homework and kitchen craft projects. Optimal outlet placement is determined by how you’ll use the island. Need more outlets on the outside for appliances or inside drawers for cell phones and laptops? (Outlet covers made to match the wooden cabinetry versus the typical plastic cover can make a huge difference in aesthetics.) Are you looking to maximize storage for small kitchen appliances? Those popular Instant Pots, Mixers, Pasta Machines and Food Processors gobble up perimeter kitchen storage. How about your collection of cookbooks? Integrated storage on the back side or ends of islands has solved many storage issues. In some overall kitchen designs, your island may be the best place for a microwave, sink, prep sink, stove, pet feeding station or pullout trash bins so that your perimeter cabinetry can be optimized for other custom details.

Window over the Kitchen Sink?

Kitchen, Design

There is no general rule that kitchen sinks should be installed under a window. Before indoor plumbing was available, it made sense. A sink near a window provided an easy way to fill and drain water to the outside. But we’ve enjoyed indoor plumbing for decades so why does the practice persist?

Before you think that it must be for the pretty view, not so fast. A pretty view isn’t guaranteed. You could be looking at your neighbor’s brick wall, trash cans, A/C units, utility meters or back alleys. Maybe you’re lucky and your backyard or some bucolic setting is framed beautifully by your window. A vista to enjoy.

Accessibility is a key reason. Running plumbing along the exterior wall with access from a basement or crawl space makes things easier. This is why you find dishwashers placed next to the sink and a refrigerator not too far away.

Other reasons? Natural light is nice when you’re inspecting your grocery purchases and access to fresh air when things just “don’t smell right”. Cabinetry designs tend to free up counter spaces around the sink to create well-organized wet zones for food prep and kitchen clean up.

For function and aesthetics, kitchen sinks under the window make a good case, but not for every space. Next blog, we’ll address sinks in the island!

Dish Whisperer

Dishwashers, Kitchen, Design

Have you encountered a dishwasher that is so quiet, you have to look for the light indicator to make sure it started? If you’ve always lived with a dishwasher that you can hear when it’s on, it’s a shock to encounter a really quiet one. I’m in a condo with a new GE dishwasher that is literally whisper quiet. I thought it was disconnected until I put my ear right up to the door. In a small space, it’s great to be able to start without worrying about the noise.

Moving many times, I’ve experienced a wide array of options… fancy brand name units that came with purchased properties and those that I had to replace. Over the past three decades, I’ve had multiple Bosch, Asko, GE and Whirlpool versions. None were as quiet as this newest GE edition… but in all fairness, technology has changed. Newer Bosch and Asko models are highly favored for their quiet cycles so I don’t have an apples to apples comparison.

The average life span for a dishwasher is about 9 to 12 years with problems surfacing in the first 5. Dishwashers in homes that I purchased were not brand new. What I vividly remember is the how repairmen cringed when quoting me replacement parts on my Bosch and Asko models. Little pesky plastic parts that weren’t made to last but cost hundreds of dollars to replace? Terrible. My GE unit is only 2 years old… so, we’ll see how it holds up. One option I would personally consider is the Miele. Despite the ticket price, they are known to last about twice as long as most other brands. Think 20 years. (I’ll definitely take a closer look next time.)

Are you planning on moving or remodeling soon? With open kitchens being positioned near family rooms, having a quiet dishwasher that performs well is nice. Having one that lasts without problems is even nicer. At AKB, we can guide you through appliance selections to find the best option for you.

Before and after pictures are satisfying… largely because it makes the process look easy! No matter the subject (person, place, or thing), seeing the end result without all the hard work is fun, but a bit misleading.

Remodeling kitchens is a messy, inconvenient, and intrusive process. (Wearing your bathrobe and greeting your work team early in the morning becomes normal.) What can you do to mitigate the hassles? Contract with professionals who will create a well-designed space that can be executed by construction and installation crews in a reasonable time frame. One of the reasons why professional remodelers do the job faster is that they have immeasurable experience. Kitchen remodels take careful thought and planning. AKB knows all about it.

The pain is worth the gain.

Kitchen cabinets that have seen better days can make any space feel tired and worn out. Cabinetry with curls, twists and other similar details are quick candidates for updating. Sometimes the layout is just all wrong. If changing the floor plan is going to help you accomplish your goals, RUN, do not walk to a professional kitchen designer. Moving plumbing and electricity takes a bit more finesse than just upgrading a current layout. Working with your contractor, AKB can come up with solutions to all the serious quirky issues older homes pose.

From a historical perspective, the kitchen makes an interesting study of how we have adapted and changed to meet the basics of living. Once we evolved from the open fire to a dedicated room for meal preparation, we set in motion the changes we enjoy today.

A time traveler would have lived with constant smoke and soot until effective ventilation systems were developed. And who needed more than one room? I’m sure pioneer living was delightfully cozy sleeping with the extended family in the same space that you slaughtered meat, baked bread, pickled vegetables, brewed ale and prepared smelly poultices. Living and working in a multi-use room must have been interesting. But by the early 1900’s, the “kitchen” was a dedicated, out of the way workroom for women. It was a warm spot to gather, sew, do laundry and cook thanks to the addition of heavy cast-iron stoves, the primary appliance of the day for cooking, heating water and heating the home.

           Washing and Preserving

Imagine our current germ phobia society washing things in the nearby stream or with the pump in the yard. Thanks to marvels of indoor plumbing, running water became available to the average household by the 1930’s. Around the same time, GE rolled out their ‘monitor-top’ refrigerator eliminating the need for ice houses and other crude means of preserving food. Originally offered at $525, it was a nice to have vs. today’s, can’t imagine life without one. With modern advancements, the kitchen became more than just a women’s workroom in the back and the term “heart of the home” began to take hold.

           Time-saving and Convenience

The number of women joining the workforce rose from 29 percent in 1950 to 34 percent in 1960. By 1970, 50 percent of single women and 40 percent of married women were working. Time-saving and convenient cooking and cleaning appliances became the name of the game. Dishwashers, garbage disposals, and refrigerators with freezers as well as microwaves were becoming popular because they made life easier… for the working mother.

Note: Growing up in the 70’s, I hated the gender inequality of household chores where unloading the dishwasher was my job but mowing the lawn was my brother’s.

Today’s kitchens are all about design, aesthetics, ergonomics, lighting, accessibility and sustainability. We’re way beyond the refrigerator, sink, cooktop, oven and dishwasher. Coffee makers, espresso machines, grinders, toasters, blenders, food processors, slow cookers, fast cookers, air fryers, warming drawers, mixers, etc… have made their way into our daily use. Personally, I’m pretty hooked on the conveniences of a coffee maker. How about you?

Minimize to Maximize! Downsizing done right.

Kitchen, Downsizing, Remodeling

Downsizing isn’t for everyone. The prospect of letting go of square footage and everything in it is just too much to manage for some people. But smaller spaces that are smartly designed minimize maintenance and can maximize lifestyle! Upgrade, not in size, but in quality and square footage with the right design elements. High ceilings, large energy efficient windows (made of certified materials and well installed) and custom storage (designed with your personal things in mind) can make your space a joy to live in.

Downsizing doesn’t mean doing with less stuff, it means doing with the right stuff! No argument here, getting rid of possessions is a challenge. Ask yourself: What items make your house a home? What activities bring you the most pleasure? Efficiency is vital and spaces need to be a celebration of function… and storage is not underrated! Seasonal items, sporting equipment, financial documents, hobby and cleaning supplies all need a place to go with easy access.

Custom cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms can be the answer to smaller spaces. At AKB, we can design cabinets to store all your important things. Coffee makers and mixers can be placed under the countertop on a platform equipped with a lift. Press a button and a section of the counter rises for use and descends when no longer needed. Pull out pantries for all your spices, dry goods, and cooking items aren’t only an excellent use of space, they make finding items easy. Vanity organizers in the bathroom work the same way. Vanities can be designed at AKB that allow you to store and power curling irons, blow dryers, electric razors and electric toothbrushes freeing up valuable counter space. AKB has done a variety of entryway organization centers, family locker solutions and laundry room storage areas. Whatever means something to you, AKB can design a beautiful custom cabinetry solution.

Sink Statements

Kitchen, Sinks, Remodeling

The sink, the stove and the refrigerator make up the concept of the kitchen “work triangle”. The proximity of these three items is a consideration when designing new spaces and creating focal points. Custom hoods above an oven… or statement sinks? The choices are based on the overall design goals. If your design leans toward a centralized sink, picking just the right material to accommodate your look and lifestyle is key. AKB’s showroom has several examples of top rated options for clients to explore!

Stainless steel sinks are the dependable workhorse of sink options. Our custom made 3 compartment sink and countertop was designed for our practicing chef, Phil Dunn, to accommodate his popular cooking classes. Not a chef? Come see one of our stainless steel favorites, the Kraus Work Station Sink. This nifty option offers an integrated ledge that allows you to work directly over your sink. Accessories slide across the built-in ledge saving space on the kitchen counter. It is wonderful and well-priced.

Silgranit sinks are durable and attractive. They are made of up to 80% quartz sand, the hardest element of natural granite. We elected to install a café brown one in a working sink to show client’s this option. The BLANCO version is offered in 9 different colors and features over 300 exclusive sink designs for you to choose from. Modern farmhouse styles and spacious under mounts in striking hues will make a Silgranit sink a dependable and stunning statement piece.

Farmhouse sinks are a customer favorite. We recently sold our Kohler cast iron farmhouse sink to a lucky buyer when we remodeled our front display. It was a timeless, white version with a smooth glossy finish. Cast iron sinks are easy to clean but you need to be careful not to damage the enamel surface with abrasive cleaners. Fireclay sinks resemble cast iron and resist stains and scratches better. Like the cast iron versions, these sinks are heavy and need to be installed on quality cabinets with weight reinforcement.

Although not on display in our showroom, other options to consider are:

Copper sinks- pricey but distinct. They are antimicrobial and thick quality options are durable and resistant to denting. Note: Time changes the patina so make sure you’re ok with the aging look.

Solid stone sinks- typical granite and marble options are pricey but timeless. They are extremely durable, especially when sealed regularly.

When you’re remodeling your kitchen and considering sink options, make sure you consult with professionals! At AKB, we’re happy to provide guidance.

Which Wood Would You Pick?

Cabinetry, Kitchen, Bathroom

Wood cabinets are the classic “go to” for kitchens. Each wood type has slight variations in the grain (knots, patterns and markings in the wood). Deciding what type of wood is best for your kitchen renovation depends on the overall look and durability requirements you anticipate for your project. Here’s a quick overview of what we see at AKB!

Painted maple kitchens are the most popular choice. Maple is hard and heavy with a smooth texture and a uniform grain that is very easy to paint. Maple is also a relatively versatile type of wood, allowing it to fit in amongst many different styles of home decor.

Cherry is geared toward the traditionalists. Durable and longwearing, it is known for its’ naturally rich and luxurious dark color, but can vary between deep yellow and pale red. Cherry is very sensitive to light so you can expect cabinets to darken with age. Cherry cabinets tend to be on the pricier side but seldom chip or dent.

Hickory wood cabinets are an affordable counterpart to cherry wood yet produce a rustic aesthetic. Hickory is hard and heavy and shows extreme color variation. Its’ unique two-toned appearance is made up of natural streaks of lighter white, and darker reddish wood. Because a stain can’t penetrate the tight grain of this wood and veining can vary in a single cabinet, hickory wood cabinets are typically sealed with a clear finish.

Poplar is a cost-effective, medium density option with good strength and stability and is particularly suited for dark-stained finishes. Wood is made up of thousands of cells, some large and some small. The large cells collect more pigment and go dark, whereas smaller cells collect less and appear light. So when you stain, you’re actually highlighting the cell structure of a tree. Bottom line, if you’re using poplar, go dark.

Oak is a very hard wood with a straight open grain. It is extremely durable with large open pores that accepts stain very well. The honey colored oak cabinets of the 80’s are out but cool toned oaks are popular today.

Alder is a nice cost effective wood that is also easy to stain. It is susceptible to dents more so than other hardwoods. With its naturally light tone, Alder is a great wood to use for lighter paint colors since it won’t show through.

Walnut cabinets feature graceful grain patterns and warm, sophisticated brown hues. The smooth, fine and general straight wood grain has colors that range from deep chocolate to light reddish-gray brown. We’ve designed many walnut and painted maple cabinetry combinations.

So which wood would you pick? The easiest answer is the best wood for the look you want at the price you can afford. Come see all the options at The Little Yellow House of Big Ideas on the corner of Lafayette and Euclid Avenues.

Dudley Webb’s vision for The Penthouses at City Center was to offer Lexington a superior mixed use property concept rivaling anything offered in larger cities like NYC and LA. He envisioned luxury lifestyle units featuring every conceivable amenity allowing you to live, work, play and stay downtown. This $242 million dollar project is slowly winding down to completion and the result is nothing less than spectacular.

How was AKB involved? It began in August 2018. To execute the vision for the penthouse units, developers turned to AKB’s Architect/Owner Brent Richards to assist in developing an integrated plan to steer the lofty design requirements for this niche property. Amenities include housekeeping, room service, health club and spa, 24/7 security, private entrance and elevators. Interior features for each of the 1609 to 5264 sqft units include 10ft main area ceilings, Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, designer countertops, intricately detailed light fixtures … and from AKB, plenty of beautiful custom cabinetry!

The Penthouses at City Center give residents the ultimate in elegantly designed spaces, premium finishes and an unprecedented amount of luxury, class and style.

Barstool "Picks"

Kitchen, Barstool

Your newly renovated kitchen only needs one more item, the right set of barstools! Selection criteria hinges on height, style, comfort and price. Your goal is to create a cohesive look that balances your new space and creates visual interest. High back, low back, or backless? Swivel vs. stationary? Upholstered, leather, wood, rattan, metal or acrylic seats? Deciding on which direction to go has a lot to do not only with the overall look you want but who will be using them.

If children are involved, no surprise that upholstery gets dirty. Leather and wood will get scratched with metal detailing on denim pants and cleated shoes. Regarding swivel vs. stationary, I’ve found that the fewest moving parts when children are involved is a good rule of thumb. Something about spinning chairs and children is a recipe for trouble. Metal swivel chairs knocking into marble countertops can also be an issue. Versions with armrests have to be carefully measured to make sure the armrests clear the countertop height easily.

How many chairs does your island accommodate? Rule of thumb is to divide the length of your island’s counter by 30 to determine how many stools will comfortably fit. Extra wide barstools will obviously reduce your overall seating capacity.

Blend in or stand out? Scandinavian elegance, Italian sleek, Amish country, a hint of retro or industrial chic… selecting barstools is all about finding the ideal balance between aesthetics and ergonomics. Ask your AKB designer for helpful hints!

Why is selecting Hardware HARD??

Kitchen, Remodeling, Hardware

Selecting kitchen and bath hardware is as much about function as it is about aesthetics. Beyond the myriad of styles and finishes available, I find it more important to select by shape and size. Hardware reduces the amount of hand contact with your cabinets, which helps to keep your cabinetry clean. So how it fits your hand comfortably is a personal choice. Maybe you are in the position of having to consider ergonomics for a diverse set of users? Large hands, small hands, arthritic hands can be accommodated with the right hardware.

           Pulls or Knobs?

Where does one begin to decide? Do you lean toward Cup Pulls, Tab Pulls, Ring Pulls, Curved Pulls, Bar Pulls, Recessed Pulls. Round Knobs, Square Knobs, Crystal Knobs, Knurled Knobs, Smooth Knobs, T-Shaped Knobs. For those not working with a designer, sometimes placing blue painter’s tape on your cabinetry helps you visualize what direction you want to go. Once those holes are drilled, you’re pretty much committed.

Pulls only-Popular in creating a more modern look. Good for hands with limited dexterity. Caution: Designs with sharp radius edges hurt to hip bump and are known pocket catchers.

Knobs only-Popular in creating a minimalistic look. Good for the budget as knobs tend to be less expensive than pulls. Caution: Larger drawers may require two knobs. Knobs that are not round tend to twirl and create misalignment. (Think oval and t-knobs horizontal when the rest are vertical)

Pulls and Knobs-Common to have both pulls and knobs featured in the kitchen. Knobs are most typically placed on doors, and pulls are placed on drawers. Remember that the same finish from different manufactures rarely matches perfectly. You should try to use just one manufacturer when selecting a combination.

Key takeaway-Each kitchen is unique to the owner. Making hardware selections should best meet your style but equally as important, your comfort. Best advice is to go to a hardware dealer where you can actually touch and feel the product and decide how it might work for you.

Not-So-Lazy Susan

Fondue Night. Growing up in the 70’s, it was my favorite answer to “What’s for dinner?” We had the basic orange fondue pot with a set of long spears that had different colored tips so you knew which one was yours. Cubes of french bread slathered in melted cheese, chunks of beef fried in hot oil and angel food cake pieces swirled in melted chocolate- the ultimate in family dinner fun. But wait! Right in the middle of Gilligan’s Island, a commercial pops up for “The Rotating Lazy Susan Fondue Set”!! A fondue pot centered on a turntable, ingenious! My brother and I always wanted one.

I was curious as to where the lazy susan originated and thought a quick Google search would provide an easy answer. Not that lucky. 13th century Chinese? 18th century England? An invention by Thomas Jefferson (for his daughter) or a by product of the phonograph by Thomas Edison? No article agreed with the next. Seems it is a bit of a mystery for such a simple little gadget. If anyone has better information, feel free to share in the comments.

In the cabinet business, Lazy Susans are a little more complex. They vary in materials, shape, size and cost with the goal of making the best use of corner cabinet areas that would otherwise be problematic. Less expensive options are usually flimsy pole mounted plastic affairs, not appropriate for heavy items. Most of our designs incorporate the serious version, the Super Susan. Rather than being supported by a pole, they are supported by a fixed shelf, rotating on a ball bearing turntable with an articulated door. They are the perfect place for small appliances, larger casserole dishes and heavy canned goods.

If you’re considering a kitchen remodel, taking it to the next level in specialized storage options is what AKB does best. Pullout Platter Drawers, Appliance Garages, Corner Drawers, Spice Storage, Super Susan, etc are available to customize your space.

Say Goodbye to the Kitchen Soffit?

Kitchen, Remodeling, Cabinetry

The ubiquitous kitchen soffit found in older homes is that drywall “box” connecting the ceiling to the top of standard size wall cabinets. The word “soffit” is derived from the French language meaning “something fixed underneath.” Soffits often hide wires, pipes or vents but many soffits have nothing underneath and were constructed around the kitchen for symmetry. Kitchen remodeling clients for years overwhelmingly regard soffits as outdated and aesthetically frumpy. Current designs favor the finished look of cabinetry to the ceiling accentuating even modest ceiling heights.

           Something behind the soffit?

If there is anything to contend with during a remodel, electrical wiring is usually not a problem. On the other hand, a 4” waste pipe would be a much bigger issue! We have on many occasions accommodated vents and pipes that cannot be relocated by working around them and custom making interior pieces to conceal issues behind the cabinet façade. This cabinet example is actually built over a HVAC vent which communicated between floors and could not be relocated. The designer was able to camouflage the vent by using a mirror behind the glass paned doors.

Regardless what you may find behind soffits, most everything can be moved… for a price. Whether the cost is worth relocating pipes or vents, or whether the installer can work some magic inside the interior of the cabinet is a question for the homeowners to decide based on budget and expressed goals of the project. Bottom line, intelligent design and a dedicated team to make it happen is all you need.

Feeling Nostalgic- The Laundry Chute

Remodeling, Laundry

Anyone else have a laundry chute growing up? I have some pretty fond memories of my brother and I parachuting GI Joe and Barbie down our vertical, sheet-metal chute, clanging on the sides until landing in the laundry basket in the basement. As elementary kids, we tried climbing up and down it with varying degrees of success until our mother put an end to our fun. I’m also pretty sure we contemplated lowering our baby brother and the family dachshund in a homemade basket system down onto the pile of cushy dirty clothes. In our young minds, it seemed perfectly “safe”. Yikes.

Laundry chutes have existed for decades and were the answer to hauling mounds of dirty clothes, towels and bedding down the stairs to the basement laundry room. The laundry rooms I grew up with were dank, dreary subterranean spaces where time spent was as limited as possible. They were spaces that were cold and a little scary with concrete floors, exposed joists and cobwebs. In today’s world, clients looking to remodel their homes are relocating laundry rooms from below to the first floor and even to the master bedroom closet. They tend to be bright, light and filled with elements that coordinate with surrounding rooms. Instead of classifying them as merely laundry rooms, they are multi-functional areas! At AKB, we’ve designed new “laundry” spaces that include home offices, craft areas, pet washing areas, coffee stations, hunting and golf equipment as well as general overflow storage. When AKB designers talk to clients, they hear their struggles and their wishes to make their lives easier. They see the space. They see the pieces and the parts. They are the ones who can create a

Mix & Match Metals- Selecting Kitchen Fixtures

Kitchen, Remodeling, Hardware

I appreciate the art of Mix & Match. Interesting rooms incorporate various colors, textures, materials and styles. Art work, furniture pieces, throw pillows, upholstery fabric and rug designs can be combined to create depth and interest to a space. Instagram is filled with design ideas that have most people wondering “How did they think to put that together?” I take particular notice of posts by local designers ex/ @schnabelcashman and @matthewcarterinteriors. Love local designers who are talented on many levels with a sophisticated sense of visual aesthetics. Ever walk into Scout Antique & Modern on Liberty Road? Those folks combine the most eclectic pieces from different eras creating a look that is both unique and interesting. Their selections appear intentional, not a complete hodgepodge of unrelated items.

Remodeling a kitchen and picking out hardware, fixtures and lighting requires some professional finesse as well. In today’s world, remodeling clients have more metal choices than ever to consider. What used to be a fairly direct choice of Silver, Gold, Brass or Iron now includes everything in between. Options now include metals that are Brushed, Oil Rubbed, Distressed, Lightly Distressed, Matte, Polished, Antiqued or Satin. Each metal has a myriad of characteristics. There is German Bronze, Honey Bronze, Light Bronze, Mahogany Bronze, Medium Bronze, Old English Copper, Pewter, Black Iron…Wait, everything doesn’t have to match? How in the world does one know how to combine all the finishes to create the perfect look? Does the light fixture have to be the same finish as the faucet? Do the pull and knobs on the cabinetry have to match the faucet? If you have a stainless sink and refrigerator do your fixtures all have to be silver? What guidelines do you follow for selecting hardware if you have a custom copper hood? What about old door knobs and hinges- do they have to be replaced?

We answer questions like the above daily at AKB. Our answers are based on the combined details of a project. Sometimes it makes sense to keep everything in the same family… and sometimes, mixing metals can be an effective way to make a room interesting. Creating that perfect look that personalizes your space is what we do best.

Powder Room, a bathroom in a private home intended for use by guests. “Functionally, a powder room needs only a toilet, a sink, and minimal storage for hand towels” according to the online version of Oxford Dictionaries, although some double as a full extra bathroom. It may be a small space but it can make a big impact on your guests and/or potential buyers of your home. Whimsical wallpapers, unique metal sinks and interesting vanities, bold paint and tile patterns, clever lighting elements…so many directions you can consider to create that perfect space in your home. Here are a few of our favorite projects!

Powder Rooms tend to be the perfect place to consider interesting wallpaper. (I once wallpapered an entire powder room, ceiling included, in Schumacher pink/cream/jade argyle. It was definitely a space to remember!) When there are no bathing areas, you don’t have to worry about residual moisture so are free to splurge on quality paper. One of my new favorite wallpaper designers I enjoy following is Dandridge Art (

Vanities and sinks don’t have to be ordinary, they can be extraordinary. Many powder rooms we’ve designed aren’t roped off for guest use only. Based on the location, the family may make daily use of the space. Custom storage options for needed items might be essential. Topped off with sleek metal basins and fixtures and the vanity looks anything but a utilitarian bathroom set-up! Don’t need storage? How about a sleek custom-made marble vanity? Or a wall mounted modern version?

Bold paint and tile patterns can be fun to incorporate in your powder room statement. This beautiful high gloss acrylic wall mounted cabinetry is framed by Calacatta Herringbone with Gold Aluminum Mosaic tile to create an ultra-chic look. Wall Mount Faucet, Towel Bar, Tissue Holder all in Luxe Gold complete the clean and contemporary picture.

Have you purchased a new car in the last couple of years?? Basic car features these days make anyone wonder how we ever learned to back one up or change lanes without altercation all this time.

What newer model cars can do is pretty amazing– cameras, lights and sensors all working in tandem to keep you collision free. The changes can either be intimidating or exhilarating. For that tech-savvy, hands free, gadget loving car buyer, the more bells and whistles, the better.

According to the July/August 2019 edition of KBB, in this tech-savvy world, finding the right appliances for the right client is more important than ever. KBB introduces readers to the Technicurean, admittedly a made up term, but a memorable one. The Technicurean loves the Smart Home. They want to control their Security, Entertainment and Living Conveniences through their Wi-fi and enthusiastically upgrade their gadgets with each new generation of products introduced. Lamps, window blinds, temperature controls, coffee machines, holiday lights all managed through voice command or a touch of their cell phone. Smart locks installed on exterior doors that appear key-only from the street but can be voice-activated to open. (Handy when your hands are full of groceries.) Security devices with dual cameras help capture the people at your door as well as the packages that were delivered. The Pet Cams allow you to monitor, talk to and dispense treats to your pups while you’re at work. So what does the Technicurean want in the realm of appliances? Industry analysts suggest they seek the ultimate in the “connected experience” and respond to the latest in hands free capabilities to control their kitchen equipment. GE Appliances offers over 100 smart appliances with programs that can work through your cell phone or with your current cloud-based voice service. Running late from work? Preheating your oven remotely can expedite your dinner hour. Don’t know what temp to make your beef tenderloin? “GENEVA, make beef tenderloin.” Your GE oven will set it to the perfect 450 degrees and turn on the timer when you’re ready to cook. No time to read the directions? Scan the back of the package and let your appliance set up the time and temperature requirements. Some Whirlpool microwaves actually remember cooking habits and can anticipate requests for your normal breakfast routine. “Will you be having oatmeal this morning?” A concept oven featured recently at a tech show from Whirlpool’s line of ideas featured an oven window that is actually a touch screen, assisting with augmented reality for a better cooking experience.

Everything set up correctly in an easy-to-use consolidated control system can result in some pretty amazing appliances. Consider yourself a Technicurean or just curious about what’s available in new kitchen appliances? No better place to start than at Architectural Kitchens & Baths, the Little Yellow House of Big Ideas. AKB partners with all the major appliance makers representing the best in what the industry has to offer.

Five Questions for Architectural Kitchens & Baths

Kitchen, Design, Remodeling

Investing in a new kitchen is a serious commitment. What do you consider the most important factor when someone is ready to remodel?

Answer: Hire a professional kitchen designer. A degreed designer who can show you an expansive portfolio of work and can explain every detail and decision made is the person who can best assist you. Independent kitchen designers work well with the builder of your choice to accomplish your goals.

Looking at before/after photos, it is clear that kitchen remodeling can involve a lot more than just replacing cabinets and countertops. What does a professional designer offer to create some of these spaces?

Answer: Professional Designers have expertise in functional layout and the ability to pull together all the pieces (cabinetry, tile, hardware, appliances, lighting, paint colors) to create the perfect space for each client. They accomplish this by listening to their client’s and then designing solutions to their everyday challenges.

Any special design needs requested by clients recently in your business?

Answer: Family Locker Systems, Integrated Kitchen Appliances, Smart Homes, Pet Feeding Stations, Aging in Place Designs, Custom Cutting Boards…

In your opinion, what general trends are you seeing in the industry?

Answer: We see clients mixing materials and embracing patterns and durability. Personalizing spaces with custom storage options makes for clean, clutter free and easier living.

What is the best way to understand costs associated with remodeling?

Answer: Great question, especially if someone has never remodeled before. The best thing to do is come talk to us. Home improvement shows don’t tell the full story of costs associated with redoing spaces. The Designers at AKB are happy to discuss all your options. We represent two comprehensive cabinetry lines that give people plenty to choose from!

Modern or Contemporary? In Kitchen Design, is there a Difference?

Many a realtor will list “modern kitchen” or “contemporary kitchen” as a property’s positive attribute. I’m pretty sure they don’t literally mean modern or contemporary, but simply any kitchen that has been updated to some degree in the last decade! No earth-colored laminate countertops or bold patterned linoleum floors! So, is there really a difference between modern and contemporary kitchen design? Design industry experts tend to see modern as more of a style, or forward movement based on past design trends… a period roughly from early to mid-20th century. Many of the design elements of modern are popular now which makes the terms seem interchangeable. However, contemporary is what is happening now: it is the contemporary version of modern. It changes with the latest in technology and materials available. Both styles tend to be a rejection of the ornate, devoid of unnecessary details. They result in a visual impact with the least amount of distraction from competing details. Contemporary kitchens take this impact a few steps further by using integrated appliances. Coffee systems, Wine Storage, Refrigerators, Dishwashers and Ice Makers all disappear into the overall kitchen design using panel ready products fitted with custom cabinetry. Full-access frameless cabinetry options (allowing no space to go to waste) are available at AKB in solid hardwood, textured thermally-fused laminate, glossy high-pressure laminate and wood veneer options for you to explore.

Ready for a new kitchen? Don’t settle for a design firm that produces only one style. You don’t want your space to look like every other project they have done. Let AKB help you create your own style. At AKB, unique clients deserve unique solutions.

Actually, they make it look deceivingly easy. Many of these shows dispense free advice and information on every aspect of the remodeling process. And of course, let us not forget the internet where there exists a dangerous amount of information available at the click of the mouse. Confidence becomes high and the allure of DIY is hard to resist to many.

           Personal Note

: As a young married, someone gave me the book Living a Beautiful Life by Alexandra Stoddard. (Did anyone else read it in the late 80’s??) The author inspired her readers to create beauty in their surroundings by adding “Elegance, Order, Beauty and Joy” to every day of their life as a personal choice. Makes me laugh now but at the time, I was personally challenged by her “call”. As a new disciple, I took to heart her discussion on the merits of faux finishes and decided it would be the perfect way to make my bedroom beautiful. (Long before the days of youtube videos, you actually went and purchased books and magazines with step by step instructions.) I dutifully researched strie and sponge painting techniques and opted for the challenge of sponge painting. It looked so easy! What’s the worst thing that could happen? If just some wasted time and cost of supplies, I was ready for the task.

           Result

: Epic fail. Using two types of green paint, I sponged, and sponged, and sponged… creating something that was so fantastically ugly, people were startled. Seriously, friends and family were rendered speechless. The nicest compliment I received was “Wow! This looks like it took a lot of time.” Ouch. When I finally was able to look at it objectively, I saw four walls that appeared covered in green algae (almost growing as you stared). It was a marvel of bad choice and technique. My only solution was to slather on a heavy coat of Kilz primer and a new coat of paint.

I realized too late that I didn’t know quite as much as my research convinced me I did.

           Lesson Learned

: Enjoy all the remodeling shows. Take notes on things you like. Go ahead and feed your DIY spirit if it means you don’t have to live with your mistakes… and realize that Chip and Joanna, et al are all professionals that have been applying their skills to this industry for years.

You’ve dreamed of the perfect kitchen for you and your family to enjoy, saving photos and articles on ideas to consider for your new room. You can’t wait to replace your ugly and unneeded soffits with beautiful ceiling height cabinetry! The tipping point comes when you sit down with pen and paper to do your financial due diligence. What exactly does a kitchen remodel cost? This is critical for many potential clients and requires more than just a guesstimate. If you’ve never remodeled before, here are some factors to consider…

There are many variables in remodeling but it mainly boils down to three typical categories: Minor, Major, and Upscale. I’ll touch on the first two and leave Upscale for another post!

Minor updating usually doesn’t involve replacing the cabinetry. New knobs and pulls, updating countertops, or maybe staining/painting existing cabinetry fall in the minor category. Major and Upscale remodeling is what AKB specializes in and involves the design and installation of custom cabinetry solutions, selection of countertops, tiles, fixtures, appliances, paint colors and lighting. But, before all these pretty pieces and parts are installed, demolition and room reconstruction are two items on your budget list that require a competitive bid. If you have not already decided on who you want to work with, AKB will help you select the contractor that best suits your needs.

Now for the fun part- deciding on all the pretty pieces and parts! The sky is the limit… and maybe you wish your budget was as well. Not to worry, this stage just may require a little give and take on your wish list. Consider the following example:

Same exact layout… and a $20,000 different price tag. The darker version is approximately $20,270 for Cabinets, Delivery & Installation, Hood, Hardware, Countertops, Appliances, Back splash, Faucet, and Sink. The lighter version is approximately $39,000 with the costlier selection of full inset doors and drawers, glass door cabinets with finished interiors, nicer grade granite and Electrolux Appliance package.

Clearly there is a wide range of costs to consider when budgeting for the look you want. At AKB, helping guide you through those decisions is what we do best.

There are three main stages of remodeling your kitchen.

usually involves an initial appointment with one of AKB’s designers in your home. The opportunity to view your space and ask questions about your needs and desires for your room is critical before pen ever hits paper. This would be a good time to also consider if you’ll need a

The second appointment is in our showroom where general sketches or computer design drawings will be presented. You will be able to view showroom displays and consider cabinet styles, woods and finishes. You may also view and discuss our substantial collection of countertop surfaces, plumbing, and other finish selections. If your remodel is at the stage requiring plumbing services,

. An estimate will be given based on your general information and feedback. At the end of this appointment, if you feel AKB is on the right path for your cabinetry design, a 10% retainer based on the estimated costs is required. (This amount is applied to the contract.) Once retained, we will continue to refine and modify your design and pricing until you are completely satisfied. When you are ready to begin the ordering process, a 50% deposit on the total contract is required.

            Obtaining a Contractor

can be a confusing process as there are a lot of options. AKB is happy to refer several qualified contractors that specialize in kitchen and bath remodels for you to consider. We work with both large and small companies and are happy to consult with your contractor to ensure the implementation of the design you want. Remember you’re not just looking for kitchen design contractors, but also plumbing contractors as well as others too, if you’re wanting to find more information,

is where it all comes together and should be a well orchestrated event! Once we have received delivery dates for your cabinets, we coordinate with you and your contractor to set up delivery to your home. When your cabinet order comes in, the next 40% of your contract is due to AKB. Installation by our installer or your contractor will be followed by countertop field measurements. Countertops are generally delivered and installed within 2-3 weeks of the template date. Once your kitchen or bathroom is completely finished, the final 10% of the AKB contract is due. At this point, AKB will thank you for allowing us to be a part of your project and hope you will allow us to take some photographs of your beautiful new space for our portfolio!
